At Ormiston Cliff Park Primary Academy, we believe that learning involves the whole of our bodies. To be good learners we need to have active bodies and minds!
Vital to a healthy mind is a healthy body, and we seek to encourage this in our children through the experiences and opportunities planned for them during school time, and after school hours.
We follow the National Curriculum programmes of study for Physical Education (PE); we believe this helps us to create a firm foundation for all children – from EYFS right up to Year 6.
All children participate in planned physical activity sessions during each week.
PE lessons include gymnastics, games skills, movement and dance. Children have the opportunity to work with teaching staff and external sports coaches who deliver tailored lessons to children building on skills. Children work in competitive and cooperative contexts and be given the opportunity to develop control and co-ordination of body movement, while exploring expressive and artistic possibilities.
From Reception onwards, we plan activities to challenge and develop the children’s physical skills through dedicated PE sessions as well as through other learning areas.
Throughout the year, children have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities. We work closely alongside the Norwich City Community Sports’ Foundation, who work in school two afternoons each week and deliver half of our PE curriculum. This enables children to access specialist coaching on a regular basis. Children also have an additional skills and techniques lesson within their year group each week.
In addition, we offer a range of sporting clubs at lunchtimes and after school. These vary throughout the year and are advertised via the office.
All children are able to participate in the Golden Mile Challenge, a fitness and stamina programme taking place throughout the year. Children compete against personal best to gain awards, as well as competing against local and national schools. For example, the Infant School was previously 1st in our cluster of schools in September 2016.
Children representing our academy have competed with other children from local schools in the Winter Games Gymnastics competition held at Ormiston Venture Academy in February. These children worked extremely hard on a floor routine and bench show. We are very proud of their achievements. We also hold an annual in-school gymnastics competition within Years 1 and 2. The winning class from the Year 2 competition compete in an inter-school gymnastics competition against another school from within our cluster.
We are making the most of current additional sports funding by developing expertise and opportunities for the children in different ways. Please see our ‘PE and Sports Premium’ page to find out how.
