Ormiston Cliff Park Primary Academy follows the National Curriculum to teach Languages.
Our children have the exciting opportunity to study Mandarin in Years 3, 4 and 5. This is taught weekly by an expert who leads the children in learning the spoken and written language through a wide range of activities. The children learn how to read and write the Chinese characters and the associated grammar enabling them to have conversations and translate pieces of text.
In Year 6, our children are taught French, which provides them with a foundation for further foreign language teaching in Key Stage 3. The lessons include all four aspects learning a language: reading, listening, speaking and writing, with the children becoming able to apply their knowledge of phonics, grammar and vocabulary with confidence.
The teaching of both languages enables pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and routine matters, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary. Furthermore, it extends and deepens their knowledge and understanding of cultures and communities in the wider world.
