Year 4 Explore the World of Saxons and Vikings

A Historic Adventure to Remember

Our Year 4 children had an absolutely wonderful day at Norwich Castle, deepening their learning about Saxons and Vikings at the end of our exciting History unit. The visit linked brilliantly with our class work on Beowulf and Michael Morpurgo’s powerful retelling of the tale.

Throughout the day, the children were immersed in storytelling, drama and hands‑on activities that brought Anglo‑Saxon life vividly to life. They met fascinating characters from the past, explored real and replica artefacts, discovered differences between Anglo‑Saxon and Viking culture, and even ventured up to the battlements to uncover clues from Norwich’s ancient history!

The highlight of the day was helping Thegn decide whether Egil the Norseman could be trusted… or whether he should be turned away!

The children showed brilliant curiosity, teamwork and reasoning as they pieced together the evidence. We’re incredibly proud of how engaged, enthusiastic and knowledgeable they were throughout the whole experience. What a fantastic way to round off our Vikings topic!
