A Journey Back to Roman Britain
Year 3 step into history with a hands-on Roman Adventure
Our pupils loved stepping back in time for a truly hands‑on Roman adventure! The day began with excitement as children explored real Roman coins, sparking brilliant discussions about who used them and what their symbols meant. This was a fantastic way to understand how money helped unite the Roman Empire.
After completing part of their learning worksheet, pupils got creative by designing and embossing their own ‘Romanesque’ coins, carefully choosing symbols to represent power and identity—just like the Romans did!
The learning continued as pupils discovered how Roman soldiers were paid and how they obtained their equipment. With their own coin to spend, they had to make thoughtful choices, selecting two pieces of army equipment and weighing up the strengths and weaknesses of shields, helmets, and weapons.
The highlight for many was exploring a range of Roman soldier artefacts. Pupils examined replicas of armour, helmets and shields—and some even got to try them on! This hands‑on experience really brought history to life, helping children appreciate the weight, design and purpose of Roman military equipment.
By the end of the day, pupils had gained:
A clear understanding of Roman coinage and its importance
Insight into Roman soldiers’ pay and equipment
Experience recognising and recreating Roman symbols
Knowledge of the advantages and limitations of Roman military gear
First‑hand experience handling Roman soldier artefacts
A huge well done to Year 3 for their enthusiasm, curiosity and fantastic learning throughout the day!
